Chiayi County is located west of Yushan, east of the Taiwan Strait, north of Tainan County, and south of Yunlin County. The administration of Chiayi is divided into two cities, two urban townships, and fourteen rural townships. They are Pozi City, Taibao City, Dalin Township, Budai Township, Zhongpu Township, Zhuqi Township, Meishan Township, Yizhu Township, Minxiong Township, Dongshi Township, Lucao Township, Liujiao Township, Fanlu Township, Shuishang Township, Alishan Township, Dapu Township, Xingang Township, and Xikou Township.

Liujiao Township is located in the west of Chiayi County. It was called “Liujiadian” because during the Yongli Period of the Ming Dynasty, Chen Shi-zheng, gentry from Fujian Province, hired six tenant-farmer families to cultivate the village. Later it was called “Liujiaodian” because of the mispronunciation.

During the Japanese Occupation, it was called “Liujiaozhuang,” and the present township office was established after the war. The office is located at Suantou Village, the economic center of the township. The name “Suantou” originally means that the village had many rich people in the past.
